Upcoming event will honor Kahnawake role in War of 1812

05/01/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke is pleased to inform the community that it will participate and assist in the coordination of an event to honor Kahnaw:kes role in the War of 1812. A special ceremony will take place on National Aboriginal Day (21, Ohiar:ha-June) and is being mainly organized by the Kahnaw:ke Legion Branch 219. Specifics are not yet announced, as the event is still in the planning stages.

Louis Stacey, the Legion President, will be the main contact on their behalf at this early stage. Others will possibly become involved in this capacity as the event approaches.

Over the past year, there have been events across Canada commemorating the War of 1812, said Chief Kenneth McComber. There are many people in Canada and Quebec who arent aware of the major impact that Kahnaw:ke had on history. Without the direct involvement of our ancestors, the society in this region and perhaps all of Canada may have turned out far different than what it is today.

The event will be open to the public.

We have an obligation to remember and honor our past, concluded Chief McComber. The Kahnaw:ke Legion is a strong advocate of ensuring that our military efforts are properly recognized. Were confident that this event is in the right hands.
