MCK authorizes Sports Complex to apply for Permit to sell alcohol at special event on trial basis

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to inform the community that a quorum of Chief & Council has agreed to authorize the Kahnaw�:ke Sports Complex to apply to the Alcoholic Beverages Control (ABC) Board for an Occasional Permit to sell alcoholic beverages on the premises during a yet-to-be-determined 18-and-over special event. According to the Kahnaw�:ke Alcoholic Beverages Law an Occasional Permit entitles the holder to sell or serve alcoholic beverages for consumption at the place and during the times indicated on the Permit and may be issued for a period of no more than twenty-four (24) hours.

This authorization is an exception to Mohawk Council Resolution #12/1994-1995, which resolved that no alcohol was to be sold or consumed within the Kahnaw�:ke Sports Complex or on the property allocated to the Kahnaw�:ke Sports Complex.  It was granted strictly on a trial basis and will be limited to the right to apply to the ABC Board for an Occasional Permit for one (1) special event. This event must have a minimum age of entry of eighteen years and be held within one (1) year from the date of Mohawk Council Executive Directive #14/-2013-2014, passed on Monday. 

For further clarity, the ABC Board will decide whether or not an Occasional Permit will be issued once an application is made.  

A survey conducted earlier in this year indicated that a clear majority of those surveyed supported the sale of alcohol at 18-and-over events where minors would not be in attendance.
 
A motion was presented at this past Monday�s Council Meeting and carried by a majority of 8 to 3, with Chiefs Lloyd Phillips, Carl Horn and Clinton Phillips voting against. Grand Chief Michael Ahr�hron Delisle Jr. was not present.
