Instatement, Reinstatement on agenda for tomorrows (Tuesday) Membership Law hearing

02/22/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK)  is reminding Kahnawakehr:non that the agenda is set for tomorrow (Tuesday) evenings Hearing into proposed amendments to the Kahnaw:ke Membership Law. The agenda is as follows:

  • The definition of Kanienkehka Great Grandparent specifically its reference to Kanienkehka lineage will be revisited, as there was concern that the term has Kanienkehka lineage is too vague and may be open to interpretation.
  • Section 13: Instatement and Reinstatement (formerly section 10.3, now moves to this section)
  • Section 14: Adopted Children. Major redraft of this section, with topic of adopted children being treated in a similar manner to other First Nations/Onkwehonwe children
  • Relevant/related Definitions (Section 4) will be addressed as they arise
The discussion and deliberations have been very effective, said Chief Arlene Jacobs, who holds the membership Portfolio with Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. Were hoping that the decision to have meetings every two weeks will keep the momentum going in order to complete this part of the amendment process.

Tomorrows meeting is the eight in the First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process. It will take place from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club.
