Mohawk-Irish Language Scholarship application deadline next Tuesday

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to advise community members who may be interested in applying for the Mohawk-Irish Language Scholarship that they MUST apply by Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 12pm noon.

As announced last month, the scholarship was created to facilitate a Mohawk Scholar from Kahnaw�:ke to attend an Irish-language course in the Irish community of An Cheathr� Rua each year, beginning this year.

Please note that the three-week course will take place from Friday, May 31st to Wednesday, June 19th. The scholarship includes transportation, tuition and living expenses (food and accommodations).

�We realize that it�s short notice, but details needed to be confirmed and finalized before we could formally open the application process,� said Iets�nhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, who is the Lead on the Heritage Portfolio for the MCK. �This is an incredible opportunity, especially since we share great pride in the survival � and revival � of our Indigenous languages and cultures, despite being surrounded by outside influences.� 

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age and on the Kanien�keh�:ka of Kahnaw�:ke Registry. The course would suit absolute beginners, and there are cultural activities and trips organized as part of the course. Additionally, course credits can be transferred to Canadian universities if desired.
