MCK acknowledges concerns raised by Kahnawakehronon

05/02/2024

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) would like to acknowledge concerns raised by Kahnawakehronon regarding air pollution coming from the Saint-Catherine industrial park adjacent to the Kahnawake Survival School.

Please note this is being taken seriously, and a meeting between the Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO), Public Safety, and Environmental Health Services took place this afternoon to assess the situation.

This week, KEPO has recorded periodic spikes in poor air quality on monitoring devices located at the Kahnaw:ke Office Complex and on Peter Foxy Road through their Air Quality Monitoring Program.

The MCK is also aware of reports about safety violations at a specific industrial facility in the area and is currently collecting emissions data and following up with neighboring jurisdictions.

At this time, it is unknown if these spikes in air quality are directly related to the operations of the industrial facility. Additional monitoring will take place in the coming weeks.

Ratsnhaienhs Cody Diabo will be contacting Mayor Jocelyne Bates to review these concerns, as well as Environment Qubec.

Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
