MCK meets with federal officials regarding Environmental Strategic Assessment

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that a meeting is taking place regarding the Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment (�Strategic Assessment�).

Representatives each from various Canadian government agencies, including Indigenous Affairs;  the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency; Transport Canada; and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans are participating.

Iets�nhaienhs Christine Zachary-Deom (who holds the Consultation Portfolio), Rats�nhaienhs Clinton Phillips (Environment Portfolio) and several technicians are representing the MCK.

The agenda includes discussion on the importance of the Strategic Assessment for cumulative effects of Various Port Projects; the Duty to Consult; the Ocean Protection Plan; and a discussion on a Collaborative Approach.

�The agenda and participation reflects the importance of this meeting,� stated Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, who provided the opening remarks. �The government is beginning to better understand that consultation is not just a word. The fact that several Directors and Regional Directors are here today is a positive step, but there�s a long way to go.�
