The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise community members that Revenu Québec has issued a new directive that is proving to be problematic for many Kahnawa’kehrò:non.

Revenu Québec has directed that all Aboriginals will need to use the releve 31 (“RL-31”) slip as proof of residency for owners, tenants and subtenants of an eligible dwelling located in an Aboriginal community to claim the housing component of the Solidarity Tax Credit when they file their 2016 income tax return.

Revenu Québec also advised the MCK that they would be “relying on the band councils to complete the RL-31 slip and provide a copy to each individual” and to Revenu Québec. The MCK advised Revenu Québec that they did not agree and were in no position to comply.

Finally, Revenu Québec agreed today to meet with the MCK with the expressed intent of coming to an alternate arrangement on this issue. The MCK is advising Kahnawa’kehrò:non who normally file at this time of the year to await the outcome of the upcoming meeting(s).

Please note that this issue does not affect those who do not file for the Solidarity Tax Credit. Also, please be advised that the MCK is acting in the capacity of ‘community advocate,’ as this is strictly a provincial initiative.
