224.82 acres of land officially transferred to Kahnawake

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that the Department of Indigenous & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has informed the MCK that it has transferred to Kahnawà:ke 224.82 acres of land adjacent to the A30 under the Additions to Reserve process.

This land is now officially part of what is formally known as “Kahnawake Reserve #14” and, as such, the status of the transferred land and the rights which can be exercised on the land is no different than the status and rights which can be exercised on the current reserve.

The 224.82 acres, which comprises Parcel D, is the largest of five parcels designated for return to Kahnawà:ke in relation to the completion of the A30. It is located adjacent to the Chateauguay border.

The remaining parcels to be returned are still being processed by INAC. These five parcels amount to approximately 500 of the 700 that will be returned to the community. The remaining 200 acres will be identified at a later date.

“There’s still some work to be done here,” stated Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “When everything is signed, sealed and delivered, then – and only then – will we be able to really move forward. We are still waiting for Quebec to follow through on its commitments to address the remaining 200 acres.”

For clarity, once the process is finalized the lands in question will once again be part of Kahnawà:ke proper, under the full jurisdiction of the community.
