The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) wishes to inform the community that consensus was reached on the final section of the proposed amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law at last evening’s sixth meeting of the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP).

After approximately 45 minutes of discussion and debate, the proposed new Section 15 (“Revocation of Entitlements”) was passed by full consensus.

The only remaining task in this Second Hearing phase of the CDMP is to enter the incidental changes to the draft law. The community will be provided with a tracked change document outlining these changes, such as proper renumbering or removal of sections and/or clauses affected by the amendments. Once that is done the Second Hearing will be declared closed.

This will be followed immediately by the Formal Reading of the Law. At the conclusion of the Reading, the Certification of the Process will be signed by the Community Representatives (who were selected by the community at the beginning of the process) and the KLCC Community Representatives.

Enactment of the law (by Mohawk Council Resolution) is expected to take place at a Duly Convened Council Meeting on Tuesday, 3 Ohiarihkó:wa/July 2018, where the Confirmation of the Will of the People is expected to be signed by Chief & Council.

The seventh meeting and Formal Reading of the Law will take place Tuesday, 26 Ohiarí:ha/June 2018 at 6:00pm at the Golden Age Club.
