- View PDFThe Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the public that the federal government has tabled new legislation yesterday that could affect Kahnawà:ke’s gaming industry.
Bill C-13 (which replaces former Private Member’s Bill C-218) was introduced into Parliament today by Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of Canada, David Lametti. The new bill is almost identical to Bill C-218 and will legalize single-event sports betting in Canada.
The MCK is disappointed that Bill C-13 does not specifically reference the interests of Indigenous people in the gaming industry. However, MCK is encouraged to note the Minister Lametti’s statement that the Bill creates “the opportunity to work with Indigenous people to strengthen their participation in the gaming industry.”
“In previous discussions, Minister Lametti has acknowledged the ‘legitimate gaming architecture’ Kahnawà:ke has established, and has indicated his support for it,” said Ietsenahienhs Gina Deer. “MCK is encouraged by Minister Lametti’s assurances and looks forward to working with him to ensure Kahnawà:ke’s role in the gaming industry is given the recognition and encouragement it deserves.”
The MCK will continue to follow developments as they occur.
