2011 Indigenous Games cancelled
07/08/2010
The Sports and Recreation Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), scheduled to take place next July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have been canceled. An official press release to announce the cancellation has yet to be issued but the cancellation is a fact, says Dave Canadian, the NAIG Council Representative for this region. He says the Aboriginal Sports Circle – who is responsible for NAIG in Canada – immediately formed a committee and has begun looking at alternative options. More information is expected to be released within the next couple of weeks. “Every region knows the importance of these Games to the youth,” said Mr. Canadian. “Once it became known that the host community was withdrawing their right to host the 2011 Games, we immediately began meeting to come up with possible solutions.” “Six years is in an unacceptable interval between Games,” said Mr. Canadian. ”We must do everything we can to ensure that our athletes have a venue to both compete at a high level, as well as to meet their fellow athletes from across Turtle Island.”
