New developments regarding local gaming issue
07/14/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community on new developments regarding the Kahnawà:ke-based gaming initiative known as “Ohwistha Lottery.” Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. met earlier today with Peter Paul, one of the Lottery’s proponents. In light of today’s discussion, Mr. Paul has agreed to end the testing phase of the lottery while both parties immediately start working on a private/public joint venture. Both parties bring important elements to the table and recognize the need to work collaboratively on a venture of this importance and magnitude. “It is far too early to make any definitive statements on this issue,” said Chief Delisle. “However, I can say that we are encouraged by today’s developments.” “While some people may be uncomfortable with a privately-run lottery, a combination private/public partnership may have some potential to be beneficial to the community,” he continued. Meetings are expected to begin next week.
