Possible amendments on the way for Sanitary Conditions Law
07/15/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that the Lands Unit has submitted a request for an amendment to the Sanitary Conditions Law. The request was made to address current and future demolition waste recycling activities in the community that could create the potential for an increased risk of land contamination and the risk to public health and safety. The original law was enacted on April 20, 1968. It has been amended four times since, the most recent time being June 2000. It was initially submitted to the Legislative Coordinating Commission, who presented it to Chief & Council. It was determined that it fits the criteria of a “Type 2” piece of legislation. Type 2 laws are those that affect a segment or specific interest within the community. They usually deal with permits; licenses; fees; the establishment of boards, commissions or committees; and/or deal with organizational administrative processes; fiscal reporting requirements; and spending, budgeting and management of community funds derived from all sources. A date will be assigned for when the process for the proposed amendment will proceed (using the Community Decision Making Process).
