Community member submits proposal for Anti-Tobacco law
08/19/2010
The Legislative Coordinating Committee of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) announced that it has received a submission for a Kahnawą:ke Law from a Community Member.
The submission, by Akenhnhahse White, was discussed at the most recent Legislative Coordinating Committee meeting, held last Thursday, 12 Seskéha/August.
As protocol dictates, the proposal will be brought to Chief and Council for discussion and will be placed in priority sequence. It will then be officially placed on the legislative calendar.
The MCK would like to remind community members that all laws or amendments must now use the Community Decision Making Process in order to be debated and passed (or rejected). Council Chiefs, Units of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke and private citizens registered on the Kahnawą:ke Membership list are eligible to propose laws or amendments.
The proposition is as follows:
The distribution and sale of any and all cigarettes with the Kahnawake territory hereby be deemed illegal. The mass production of any tobacco that is not strictly intended for personal use, such as medicinal, be deemed illegal.
