Protest in Ottawa tomorrow against Education funding shortfalls

09/22/2010

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to remind the community that there will be a protest tomorrow (Thursday) against the chronic underfunding of Native education in Canada.

Chiefs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, Clinton Phillips and Kenneth McComber have confirmed their participation in the First Nations Education Rally. The event was called by Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Attleo.

Two school buses will leave the cenotaph area at 10am to participate in the event, which gets underway at 1pm on Parliament Hill. One bus is already confirmed to be filled to capacity, while the second still has some seats available. Interested people must contact Brittany Diabo or Chief Sky-Deer at the MCK to reserve a place. The telephone number is 450-632-7500.

Anyone else wishing to participate is urged to attend. If you’re driving, be reminded that you should leave early to find parking in the downtown Ottawa area.

“This event is extremely important,” said Chief Sky-Deer. “The government needs to be given the strong message that Native people are standing together to fight for our right to proper funding for education. Otherwise, they’re condemning our future generations to a life of poverty and despair.”
