Seigneury Ratification Process update
09/30/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Chief & Council have agreed to the recommendation for a three phase approach to the ratification process of any potential settlement of the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis land grievance. “There is no offer on the table at this time,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. “However, as the negotiations continue we – as a community – need to be prepared and informed on any potential settlement offer. Of course, the process we use to make the final decision on whether or not to accept the offer will be extremely important.” The recommendation was made and presented by the MCK’s Seigneury team at the Monday, 27 Seskehkó:wa/September Council meeting. The first phase would include door-to-door consultation to inform the community on the details of a settlement offer that would be received. The second phase would use the Community Decision Making Process to build consensus on the potential settlement package. The third phase includes the possibility of a community-wide vote, should the community determine this as its direction. Any comments on this topic should be forwarded to either the individual chiefs or via communications@mck.ca.
