Waste Management Plan approved

10/07/2010

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke has announced that the Environmental Protection Office’s Waste Management Plan was approved at this week’s Council meeting.

The Plan was developed in order for the MCK to have a strategy in place for the management of waste generated within the Territory for the next five years and, importantly, to potentially access funding to carry out specific action items related to waste reduction.

The main objectives of the Plan include:

• Maximizing source reduction to minimize waste generation

• Maintaining and enhancing integrated strategy that promotes efficient, effective and environmentally sound refuse and recyclables collection systems

• Increasing public awareness to increase participation on source reduction initiatives

• Increasing recycling opportunities to minimize waste disposal requirements

• Developing consistent messages for public outreach about recycling and waste collection

“We are continuing to work toward improving the responsible management of natural resources,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “Our Environment Protection Office continues to lead the way in this regard. The Plan should help get even more people on board to recycle and compost as much as possible.”
