Kahnawą:ke consumer advisory
10/19/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) is advising community members that a sales representative for Shaw Direct is in the Territory selling satellite services and that Kahnawakehró:non purchasing services from this company will be paying taxes. There have been problems with the Shaw Direct billing department, who are continuing to assess and charge taxes to Kahnawą:ke clients. The MCKs tax consultant, John Latour, has made several attempts to resolve the problem with Mr. Robert Morin, the Shaw Direct sales representative. At a meeting held on 3, Seskéha/ October, Mr. Morin made assurances that the problem would be corrected; however, the problem continues at this time. Additionally, Mr. Latour contacted Shaw Direct Customer Service on 13 Seskéha/October but has not yet received a reply. Kahnawakehró:non are being advised to refrain from purchasing services from this company until the situation is resolved. Community members are urged to submit names of businesses on the Band Cards Accepted list as a guide to businesses that either honor or do not honor the Kahnawą:ke tax exemption. This page can be accessed online at www.kahnawake.com/bandcards.
