New restricted parking areas announced

11/05/2010

The Community Protection Unit (CPU) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke has announced that new parking restrictions are to be put into effect in two areas within the community. The planned date for implementation is 1, Tsothhrha/December, 2010.

The first area is Rabaska Road, from Rabaskas to the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center; the second will be a portion of the New River Road, which runs parallel to the Recreation Path.

For Rabaska Road, parking will be permitted on the east side (opposite the sidewalk). For the New River Road, parking will be permitted on the north side (on the same side as the Recreation Path); also, please note that there is a section of New River Road where no parking will be permitted on either side (see map below). Signs will clearly indicate all restrictions.

Most of the residents and businesses in the areas have been notified and are in agreement.

During the upcoming weeks the CPU is requesting that community members respect the proposed restrictions so that traffic can be monitored. Once the signs are installed there will be a grace period in which violators will be warned instead of being issued tickets.

The changes are being made solely in the interest of community safety, said Arnold Lazare, the Associate Director of the Community Protection Unit. The Kahnaw:ke Safety Committee developed a parking policy to address concerns that emergency vehicles could not pass safely in certain locations. The policy was first put into effect on the Old Malone Highway and was later altered on a trial basis to accommodate some businesses.

The date when the restrictions are to be officially enforced will be announced to the community. Visit www.kahnawake.com, email safety.committee@mck.ca or call the CPU at 450-632-0635 for further information.
