12/14/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is informing the community that Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. will meet with Quebec Premier Jean Charest at 3:30pm this afternoon in Quebec City to review the progress of the negotiations currently underway between Kahnawà:ke and Quebec. This meeting is a follow-up to the meeting of 10 Ohiarí:ha/June 2009, at which time the Grand Chief and the Premier signed the Statement of Understanding and Mutual Respect and developed a Framework Agreement for these negotiations, which include the Sectoral Agreements of 1999 (better known as the ‘Ten Agreements’), as well as other areas of mutual political concern. “Make no mistake - we’ve been extremely frustrated by the lack of movement,” said Chief Delisle. “We’re hoping that, by meeting with the Premier face-to-face, we’ll be able to clear some of the roadblocks we’re continually running into. The Framework is already in place – there has to be the political will to follow through.” “Our aim is to provide Mr. Charest the opportunity to give direction to his cabinet to take immediate measures to achieve this goal,” added Chief Delisle. Intergovernmental Affairs Portfolio Chief Mike Bush and Chief of Staff Mike O’Brien will also be in attendance.
