The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to congratulate Kahnawake Sustainable Energies and its parent Tewatohnhi’saktha on Hydro-Quebec’s acceptance of their proposal to supply electricity to the utility through a twenty year power purchase agreement.
It is proposed that the wind energy farm is to be located at nearby St. Cyprien de Napierville. It was the only First Nations project of the twelve that were awarded by Hydro-Quebec.
“This is good news to receive just before the Holidays,” said Chief Lloyd Phillips, one of two MCK chiefs holding the economic development portfolio. “Wind energy creates clean electricity and, as Mohawks, this is a project that meets our criteria of being environment friendly in addition to being financially rewarding for the community.”
“Tewatohnhi’saktha should be commended for their perseverance in getting over the first hurdle,” said the other portfolio chief, John Dee Delormier. “The work to build and maintain relationships with the citizens and municipal government of St. Cyprien now takes on even greater significance.”
Operations are scheduled to begin in December 2015.
