Kahnawą:ke pleased about nuclear shipment delay

01/25/2011

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that it is pleased that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s decision to indefinitely delay a proposed plan to ship nuclear waste through the St. Lawrence Seaway.

A Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke Executive Directive against the proposed shipment was passed unanimously by Chief & Council on October 4, 2010. It was among several declarations made by communities that would be affected by such a shipment.

“We should always do everything we can to protect Mother Earth,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “There was absolutely no way we were going to sit idly by and allow this material to pass through our Territory. Once we made our announcement, we received support not only from Kahnawą:ke but from people throughout the region, and beyond.”

“Maybe now Canada will see the light and look at other, more viable options in dealing with their nuclear waste.”
