MCK issues clarification regarding media report
01/26/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehronon that it is has not entered into a policing agreement with Kanesatake, despite some media reports that imply such an arrangement may be imminent.
“We remain very supportive of our sister community, but any talk of arrangements and/or agreements on this issue is extremely premature, as the issue hasn’t made it to the Council table yet.”” said Kahnawà:ke’s Policing Portfolio Chief Lloyd Phillips.
“While it goes without saying that we are aware that policing is a priority in Kanesatake, we wish to make it clear: at this time Kahnawà:ke’s Peacekeeper Services Board is only exploring options based on a request from Kanesatake,” he continued.
The Surete du Quebec has policed Kanesatake since 2004, an arrangement that has been problematic for the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake.
