Chief to attend anti-nuke meeting
03/01/2011
Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Environmental Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips will be attending a meeting being organized by the Chiefs of Ontario to create a plan of action to help stop the planned shipment of sixteen used nuclear steam generators from the Bruce Nuclear Plant in Ontario. Kahnawà:ke was invited by the Chiefs of Ontario as a result of the united statement released by the Mohawk Councils of Akwesasne, Tyendinaga and Kahnawà:ke on 9 Enníska/February, that condemned the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s decision to allow the shipment through the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and the Seaway. “There are Senate hearings on this matter scheduled for March 8 to 10,” said Chief Phillips. “We will make our objection to this fiasco absolutely clear. We are also finalizing plans for a national ‘Day of Action’ for our people from coast to coast.” A statement is expected to be released after the Chiefs of Ontario meeting, which will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) in Toronto. The Senate hearings will be taking place in Ottawa.
