MCK issues warning re: Charity Scams
03/21/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to advise the community that there has been an increase in the number of charity scams reported in and around the Territory.
Bogus charities often use names that are very close to the names of legitimate and respected charities.
What often happens is that the business sends in bills for payment for advertising space in phone directories, yearbooks or other promotional materials in the name of charitable organizations. While occasionally the business does provide a small portion of the proceeds to a charity, often the money is actually kept by the business that is operating a charity scam.
If you suspect that you or your business has been the victim of fraud, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud center at 1-888-495-8501 or the Kahnawą:ke Peacekeepers at 450-632-6505 to make a report.
More information and suggested actions are available on the public documents page of the website.
