First reading announced for proposed amendments to Sanitary Conditions Law

The Legislative Coordinating Commission has announced that the First Reading of the proposed amendments to the Sanitary Conditions Law has been scheduled for Monday, 9 Onerahtohkó:wa/May at 1:30pm in the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s large conference room. Community members are invited to attend the First Reading, at which time the draft amendments will be officially read and community feedback shared. The proposed amendments are currently undergoing a 30-day community review, in which Kahnawa’kehró:non are invited and encouraged to give feedback. Interested people should contact either Heather Jacobs-Whyte (450-638-8244, heather.jacobs@mck.ca) or Eva Johnson (450-635-9554, eva.johnson@mck.ca ) to ensure opinions, ideas or suggestions are officially received. The final day for this first review period is Friday, 29 Onerahtókha/April. Draft amendments to the Sanitary Conditions Law are available at the MCK’s Capital Unit, located across from the Youth Center and the main office reception. The original law is available for viewing at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com under “Legislation.” According to Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips, the amendments are being proposed to create more effective regulations to better control landfill and other substances that are brought onto the Territory.
