First Reading for proposed amendments to Sanitary Conditions Law on Monday
05/05/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the First Reading of the proposed amendments to the Sanitary Conditions Law will be held at MCK main building on Monday, 9 Onerahtohkó:wa/May at 1:30pm.
Community members are invited and encouraged to attend. Please try to arrive a few minutes beforehand.
In accordance with the Community Decision Making Process, this has been deemed a “Type 2” law and, as such, has been following the process designated for that type of legislation. “Type 2” laws are of a regulatory nature, defined as laws that affect “a segment or specific interest within the community.”
The original law was passed in 1968. These amendments have been put forth by the MCK Lands Unit in the interest of better protecting the environment. Community feedback was received during the Thirty Day Review Period which ended last week.
Monday’s Reading will be the first-ever using the Type 2 process. Other pieces of legislation currently using the Community Decision Making Process are Type 1 (“Laws of general application”), which uses a different format.
The agenda will include a general review of all activities to date; the actual reading of the law in its entirety; an explanation of the proposed amendments; and an overview of the feedback received during the Thirty Day Review Period. This will be followed by an “open floor” opportunity for more feedback and, finally, an outline of the next steps in the process.
