MCK to take action for purposes of safety and health
05/09/2011
As a response to complaints by community members, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) will be taking immediate action against person/persons who are neglecting to remove garbage from their properties or places of residence.
This action is being taken strictly in the interest of protecting the health and safety of the affected residents of the properties but, also, to protect surrounding neighbors. Rotting household garbage attracts rats and other urban scavengers, which have the potential of spreading rabies and other associated diseases.
Offenders will be given notice to remove and properly dispose of all garbage and debris on the property they occupy. Assistance on disposal methods will be provided by the Kahnawą:ke Environmental Protection Office should it be required.
Should offenders choose to disregard this notice the MCK will make the necessary arrangements to have the garbage/waste removed. The offenders will be billed for any and all costs related to the removal.
Finally, community members should be assured that these measures are only being implemented in extreme cases and not merely for cosmetic reason. Nonetheless, taking care of Mother Earth should always be our prime concern, and people are always encouraged to respect their neighbors by taking proper care of disposing all household waste.
