MCK and Quebec sign Mohawk Self Insurance agreement, ratification imminent
05/11/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Québec has tentatively agreed to recognize Mohawk Self Insurance as the sole worker safety insurer in the Territory, replacing CSST.
A draft agreement was reviewed by representatives of both the MCK and Québec yesterday (Tuesday) and signed by Intergovernmental Affairs Portfolio Chief Mike Bush and Labor Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby (on behalf of MCK) and Native Affairs Minister Geoff Kelley (on behalf of Québec).
The agreement will be presented in the National Assembly tomorrow for formal passage.
“This validates all of the work we’ve been doing for the past 27 years,” said Chief Kirby. “The fact that the province is going to change its law to accommodate and recognize our program is very significant and something we can all be proud of.”
The Mohawk Self Insurance program has been officially in operation since 1984. It was created to better respond to the needs of the local (Kahnawà:ke) contractors to protect their workers.
