Community Advisory regarding policing issues

06/28/2011

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community about concerns regarding privately owned and operated security firms operating within the Territory.

Chief & Council met with representatives of the Peacekeepers and the Peacekeeper Services Board on Monday, 27 Ohiarķ:ha/June to discuss issues that have arisen in this area. As a result the MCK is issuing the following advisory to the community:

Please be advised that all private security firms are obligated to follow directives issued by the Kahnawą:ke Peacekeepers when intervening in any situation. Furthermore, any interference in any on-going police investigation or action cannot and will not be tolerated. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke supports and reaffirms that the Kahnawą:ke Mohawk Peacekeepers have the sole jurisdiction and mandate to protect and serve the community by providing policing services throughout the Territory of Kahnawą:ke.

Private security firms offering services to businesses or private homes can provide a positive role in the community. However, the MCK has agreed with the (PSB) recommendation that this industry needs to be properly regulated in order to prevent problems from occurring due to lack of standards, accountability, communication and cooperation; thus, the MCK has delegated this task to the PSB, who will immediately begin the process of exploring the creation of such regulations.

The security firms will be directly advised of these developments through a letter to be sent by the Peacekeeper Services Board.
