MCK supports community watch, announces new Peacekeepers funding agreement

08/15/2011

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that it is supportive of ‘community watch’ groups that will assist the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers in better protecting the community. Recent meetings called by community members are being viewed as very positive, as it is everyone’s responsibility to keep Kahnawà:ke safe.

“We must look out for each other: our neighbors, children and elders,” said Policing Portfolio Chief Lloyd Phillips. “The Peacekeepers do a good job but cannot be everywhere. We’d like to assure the community that we’re taking these latest developments very seriously, and what can be done is being done. Although the recent home invasion is deplorable, we must keep in mind that, overall, our community is very safe.”

Additionally, the MCK is pleased to announce that it has approved the renewal of financial agreements with Quebec and Canada that will provide an additional $570,000 for Peacekeepers services over the next two years. This will allow the Peacekeepers to continue the development and improvement of standards and to address training, administrative and manpower needs – including hiring additional officers to allow for increased patrols and improved service.

“We’ve been working closely with the Peacekeepers for over a year to ensure that the needed resources are available,” added Chief Phillips.

Finally, Chief Phillips says that the Peacekeepers are willing to assist in the creation and operation of community watch programs. Kahnawa’kehró:non are reminded that they should contact the Peacekeepers at 450-632-6505 should they have any information on the home invasion, or any other crime. There is also a Tip Line available at 450-632-2802, should you wish to contribute anonymously.
