MCK pledges assistance re: neighborhood watch

08/24/2011

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) has announced initiatives to support the volunteer ‘neighborhood watch’ that has been created by a group of Kahnawa’kehró:non concerned about community security following the recent robbery and assault of a local elder.

At the meeting of 23 Seskéha/August, Chief & Council agreed to give direct support to the neighborhood watch by assisting with printing, lamination, various media-related services, as well as purchasing reflective vests and flashlights. The MCK will absorb these costs.

The neighborhood watch is looking for volunteers to participate. Jeremiah Johnson has agreed to coordinate the volunteers and will work with the various agencies to help ensure that the mandate to protect the community is carried out and respected. He can be contacted at 514-996-3948 or jeremiah212@hotmail.com .

This initiative follows the recent announcement by the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawà:ke that stated a commitment to begin patrols, another initiative the MCK supports.

“We strongly support any efforts that will make our community safer and more secure,” said Chief Clinton Phillips, one of those who attended last night’s meeting. “The MCK and the Peacekeepers have publicly stated their support for improved vigilance. We will continue to keep the lines of communications open with all of those who have promised to help.”
