Sanitary Conditions Law update
12/01/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chief & Council have approved the Third Reading of the draft amendments to the Sanitary Conditions Law, to be scheduled shortly.
The Second Reading of proposed amendments was held on 2, Kentenhkó:wa/ November at the Moose Lodge. At that meeting, some suggestions were put forth to make changes to the draft to indicate exactly the types of businesses/industries that could be affected in the regulations. After due consideration, the suggested changes were not implemented.
“After discussion, Chief & Council unanimously supported the Lands Unit and Environment Protection office,” said Lands portfolio chief John Dee Delormier. “They felt that including a list of industries in the law itself could limit the application of regulations in the future, when new industries that currently don’t exist could come into being. The spirit and intent of the amendments are to protect our land from harmful materials, not to prosecute certain businesses or industries.”
As there have been no objections to the actual proposed amendments in either the two 30-Day reviews or the two official Readings, it is expected that the process will be finalized in the next few weeks.
The proposed amendments were designated as “Type 2” laws (those that are regulatory in nature). For information on all aspects of the Community Decision Making Process, please visit www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
