Winter home preparations

12/20/2011

The Public Works Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind community members to prepare their homes for the upcoming freezing weather.

Mobile home owners should inspect their skirts to ensure they are properly secured and insulate their water pipes with heat tape to prevent freezing. Check all structural supports to ensure they are in good condition, sagging can cause cracks and damage.

Stone foundation home owners should check for cracks and seal them accordingly.

All home owners should remember to turn off external water taps and store garden hoses. A simple tube of silicone will help ensure your home is airtight. Check around windows and doors as well as plumbing, furnace and dryer vents.

A well prepared home will not only save on heating costs, but the environment as well. For tips on housing maintenance, visit www.cmhc.ca .
