MCK, Hydro Quebec sign agreement
12/21/2011
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that an agreement has been reached with Hydro Quebec that will address payments for certain infrastructure passing through the Territory.
The agreement is specific to transmission lines 1A and 2A, and includes the years 1996 to 2011. The lands in question are held in common – no private lands are included in this agreement.
“We’re very pleased that we’ve been able to finally come to agreement on this long-standing impasse,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “Today’s agreement is the result of a lot of hard work by our team, as well as by the Hydro Quebec team. This will create momentum as we continue to build a relationship with Hydro.”
As with many intergovernmental agreements, not all details can be divulged, though the MCK acknowledges that compensation for the community is a top priority in this matter.
