Proposed ‘Anti-Tobacco’ legislation developments announced

02/14/2012

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (‘the Commission’) wishes to inform the community that information on proposed anti-tobacco legislation will be made available at a kiosk to be located at the Kahnawa:ke Services Complex from 9am to 3pm on 16 and 23, Enníska/February.

Both dates are Thursdays. The proponent of the proposed law and a representative from the Commission will also be guests on the K103 Partyline Talkshow on Thursday the 23rd at noon.

The information kiosk is the first opportunity for any type of formal community feedback regarding the proposed law, which was submitted to the Commission by community member Akenhnhahse White on 29, Ohiari’kó:wa/July 2010.

The proposition includes the following:

“The distribution and sale of any and all cigarettes within the Kahnawake territory is hereby deemed illegal. The mass production of any tobacco that is not strictly intended for personal use, such as medicinal, be deemed illegal.”

In early 2011 it was categorized as legislation that would use the ‘Type I’ process of the Community Decision Making Process. Other than the information contained in this release, no dates have been scheduled for hearings or other activities at this time.
