02/15/2012
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (‘the Commission’) wishes to inform the community that it has received a new request for legislation regarding the creation of a community/residential area law using the Community Decision Making Process.
The written request was signed by 39 Kahnawa’kehró:non and officially submitted on 16, Tsothohrkó:wa/December. The proponents have tentatively named the potential legislation the Karihwakweniénhtshera Law.
The request included the following passage:
“Until the recent past, the community for the most part has enjoyed an underlying respect and unwritten understanding of the areas within our community. We are specifically concerned about the huge buildings that are erupting in the residential village areas.”
Kaia’titàhkhe Jacobs and Kakaiònstha Deer signed the request on behalf of the group.
The Commission has now begun the initial steps to ensure the request is properly addressed and brought to the community for its consideration in a timely manner.
More information will be forthcoming in the near future.
