02/16/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) announced today that Grand Chief Michael Ahrķhron Delisle, Jr. and John Duncan, Canadas Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Kahnawą:ke/Canada Relations.
The MOU outlines a process for a working relationship that establishes the scope of work to be done and identifies a timetable.
The initial topics to be discussed are Membership and Land Management. The MOU contains provisions for other topics/matters to be added as deemed necessary.
Chiefs Lloyd Phillips and Martin Leborgne are the leads on the Kahnawą:ke/Canada Relations file.
I believe this is a significant development, said Grand Chief Michael Ahrķhron Delisle, Jr. This shows a commitment to sit together to address these two long-standing and contentious issues. This marks the beginning of working toward a more respectful relationship and the ability to have a working table to address other outstanding issues.
