Mandate received to amend Election Law
03/14/2012
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to inform the community that, as a result of the First Hearing held on 27, Enníska/February 2012, a mandate was received to move forward with proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law.
Therefore, the next Hearing will be used to determine the scope, purpose and intent of the amendments.
Once a consensus has been reached, a working group will be created to draft the actual amendments. In accordance with the terms of the Community Decision Making Process, this working group will include community members chosen by those present in order to help ensure that the community’s wishes are respected and carried out.
The list of possible amendments put forth at the First Hearing included criteria/qualifications for candidates; term limits; the number of Council Chiefs; the creation of consistency between the Kahnawake Election Law and the Kahnawá:ke Membership Law; and chiefs’ accountability.
Further to this, the question to be posed to the participants will be, “Are there any other additions to the amendments of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law?”
The next Hearing will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Tuesday, 20 Enniskó:wa/March from 6 to 8pm. Please note that the organizers are maintaining a strict two hour time limit in order to respect people’s schedules. Participants are being asked to arrive by approximately 5:45pm in order for seating arrangements to be explained and for the meeting to begin promptly.
The final report on the First Hearing has been posted at the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission’s website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com. Copies of the current law, the community consultation feedback report, and other relevant information are available at the MCK main office reception or by accessing the website.
