Kahnawa’kehró:non exempt from Quebec Health Contribution
04/16/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that It has been confirmed, through the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL), that First Nations people who earn their living on reserve or are tax exempt by other means, will be exempt from paying the mandatory annual Quebec Health Contribution recently imposed by the provincial government.
The MCK has been discussing this issue with the province for over a year through our Quebec- Kahnawà:ke Relations team and by working closely with the AFNQL.
"It is always good when you’re able to have a success story,” said Chief Lloyd Phillips, who holds the AFNQL portfolio. “There are still some details to be worked out but we will not have to pay."
More information will be coming in the near future, including how to obtain refunds for those people who already paid the fee.
