PK Patrols stepped up on Kateri Island
04/18/2012
The Kahnawake Peacekeepers have stepped up patrols in the area of Kateri Tekawitha Island in response to recent complaints regarding public safety.
Officers responding to calls on the Island have noticed an increase in the amount of garbage being left behind by some residents, such as discarded liquor bottles, beer cans and bottles. Drug paraphernalia has also been found.
“The grounds around the pow-wow site have become a particular cause for concern, as it’s an area frequented by our children and those who use the recreational path,” said Chief Peacekeeper Dwayne Zacharie. “The Island is strewn with broken glass and other trash. Apart from being an eyesore, it poses a threat to public safety, as it could cause serious injury,” added Zacharie.
Local residents can assist the Peacekeepers by reporting any suspicious activity on the Island, especially in the late evening and early morning hours.
