Electoral Officer issues statement re: petition
04/20/2012
Electoral Officer Michael Sky was officially handed a petition today (April 20th, 2012) requesting that the referendum for the Kahnawą:ke Casino Project be ceased until further notice.
The petition reads -
"The signatures below, hereby request the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke and the Electoral Officer Michael Sky to cease actions on the upcoming referendum for a Land Based Casino on April 28, 2012 until further notice." As a result, the Electoral Officer is issuing the following statement -
"It would have to be extraordinary circumstances that would cause me to cease the referendum until further notice. Ive examined the petition and counted only 199 signatures that I consider to be valid. I dont consider this number sufficient to terminate the vote. I am announcing that I will not be ceasing the referendum process and it will go on as stated."
Referendum Day will be Saturday, April 28, 2012 with voting to take place between the hours of 9am to 6pm at Kateri School. A special poll (advance poll) will be held tomorrow on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 2pm to 4pm, also at Kateri School. <-i><-i>
