MCK responds to flyer distributed via Canada Post
04/23/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that it has become aware of a flyer that has been distributed via Canada Post. The flyer does not indicate who sent it, nor does it contain contact information.
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke has received complaints from community members that the use of a photograph of the incident at ‘Whiskey Trench’ in 1990 is irrelevant to the casino issue and in extremely poor taste.
“I am greatly disappointed by the insensitivity to the women, children and elders who actually were subjected to that assault,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “We’ve spoken to many people who are angered by this tasteless misuse of one of the most devastating incidents in our history.”
The MCK would like to remind community members to get the proper information on the issue. An information office is open from 10am to 5:30pm from Monday to Friday at the former Environment Protection office on the Old Malone Highway, where community members are welcome to drop by and ask questions or call 450-638-9527. There is also a website that can be accessed at www.kahnawakecasinoproject.com.
The referendum date is set for next Saturday, 28 Onerahtókha-April from 9am to 6pm at Kateri School.
