The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that the following dates have been set aside for Community Consultations for the proposed Kahnawà:ke Justice Act.
As previously announced, the first draft of the document was completed by the Technical Team and posted on the www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com website on 18 Ohiari’kó:wa/July. Community members are asked to view the draft in advance of the upcoming Consultations. Those who don’t have access to the Internet can ask for a copy of the draft at the Commission offices located on the third floor of the old Lafleur’s Building in the village area or at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s main office.
The Consultations will be held at the Karonhianónhnha School gymnasium on the following dates:
1. Wednesday, 19 Seskehkó:wa/September, from 6:00 to 8:30pm 2. Tuesday, 25 Seskehkó:wa/ September, from 6:00 to 8:30pm 3. Tuesday, 9 Kenténha/October, from 6:00 to 8:30pm 4. Saturday, 13 Kenténha/October, 1:00 to 3:30pm
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Commission Coordinator Kahente Horn-Miller of the draft document. “The community now gets the opportunity to look at it, review the work that’s been done, ensure that it meets the original mandate that was given and, most important, make decisions on the next steps to be taken in the creation of our own justice system.
“This is history in the making and we’re hoping a large number of people come out to participate.”
