Notice to Community re- Train Whistles
10/19/2012
The Community Protection Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that it will be jointly conducting a detailed safety assessment with the Canadian Pacific (CP) regarding train whistles at level crossings in the area of the new development (‘South Texas’).
Due to numerous complaints by residents, the MCK and the CP are working towards an agreement that would see the discontinuation of train whistles at three of the four level crossings in the area. Please note that the three crossings are equipped with flashing lights and gates and the fourth has no gate and utilizes a flagman during certain times and would not be affected.
If both the MCK and CP are in agreement and the crossings meet the Transport Canada Guidelines for Eliminating Whistling at Public Crossings, the MCK could pass a directive to prohibit whistling at those specific crossings.
The MCK has an obligation to give public notice regarding this project. For detailed information, please go to www.tc.gc.ca/eng/railsafety/guideline-287.htm. Should anyone have questions, please contact the Community Protection Unit at 450-632-0635.
