Justice Act nears completion of First Hearing
11/09/2012
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to inform the community that last night’s fifth community consultation on the proposed Kahnawà:ke Justice Act was a success in that it had been hoped that sections V through VII would be completed; however, Sections VIII through IX were also completed, leaving only sections on Definitions and Regulations on Judicial Ethics remaining.
The First Hearing process includes the current community consultation sessions.
“There was some very good discussion last evening,” said Justice Portfolio Chief Christine Zachary-Deom. “Minor changes, clarifications and adjustments were made to the document, which will be incorporated into the draft. I’m happy to say that we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”
The next community consultation will be held on Wednesday, 28 Kentenhkó:wa/ November. If necessary, another will be held in Tuesday, 11 Tsothóhrha/December. Upon completion of the First Hearing, the draft Kahnawà:ke Justice Act will be revised to include all changes. The Second Hearing within Phase II of the process will then begin.
In order to help facilitate discussion, participants are asked to view the draft Kahnawà:ke Justice Act in advance. It is available at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke main building, the Justice Building (the former Lafleur’s store in the old village area) or on-line at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
