Justice Act Phase I activities completed
11/29/2012
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to announce that, in regard to the proposed Kahnawà:ke Justice Act, the ‘Phase I’ portion of the Community Decision Making Process has been completed.
The final section of the draft was reviewed and discussed at the sixth community consultation session held last evening.
The draft will next be revised by the Justice Commission working group and will include changes suggested during the sessions held during the past several weeks. Phase II of the process will begin in 2013.
“We’ve come a long way from the initial meetings in September 2009, getting the community mandate in January 2010 and completing the first draft this spring” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “We’d like to thank the community for its participation and patience. While Phase I is now complete, there is still much work for the community to do. The Kahnawà:ke Justice Act will be the foundation that will allow us to administer our own laws and promote and protect our jurisdiction.”
As a result of these developments, the community consultation scheduled for 11 Tsothóhrha/December has been cancelled.
