Beaver control program underway
12/04/2012
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke would like to inform the community that a trapping crew of Northern Cree hunting specialists has been contracted to carry out beaver trapping within the Territory. The program will take place over the next several days in the area near Clay Mountains, the New Development and CP railroad tracks. As part of the operation, the beaver lodges in the area will also be dismantled.
Beaver control is necessary for the protection of private and public lands and infrastructure, as a result of flooding caused by beaver dams. As beaver dam removal alone is not effective, it is necessary to remove the beaver as well. Unfortunately, live trapping is not an option. In all instances, the animals will be destroyed using the most humane methods possible by experts in this field.
Trapping will take place during daytime hours. However, residents are warned that they may hear some gunfire during evening and nighttime operations, when the animals are most active. All necessary safety precautions will be strongly enforced.
Please note that a Kahnawą:ke Conservation officer will be with the trappers at all times to ensure compliance and to maintain a local presence in the operation.
