Sports Complex Alcohol Survey
01/10/2013
The Sports & Recreation Unit (SRU) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke would like to announce that they will be conducting a survey to gauge public opinion on the sale of alcohol beverages at the Kahnawake Sports Complex. The survey will take place beginning on Wednesday, January 16th.
"Every few years, individuals, promoters and team managers ask us why we don′t allow alcohol at the arena because they want higher attendance at their events," said Mackenzie Whyte, SRU General Manager. "We brought it to the Council Chiefs and they said to gauge the public, so that′s what we′re doing." Surveys will be conducted in person in the lobby of the Kahnawą:ke Services Complex (Bank, Post Office) on Wednesday and Thursday, January 16th and 17th, and then at the Kahnawake Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday, January 18th and 19th. An online survey will also take place for one week beginning on Wednesday, January 16th at www.kahnawake.com. Results will be made public.
The survey results will not determine whether or not alcohol will be sold or in what capacity. Only Chief and Council can decide that. However, they require Community feedback before making a decision. Community members are asked to take part.
"Our arena runs at a deficit and we don′t want to be a drain on community funds, especially with things being so tight," continued Whyte. "We are facing services being scaled back and we are looking at any way to generate revenue. Besides having higher attendance at events it would encourage promoters to hold more events."
