Hearings on Membership Law set to begin next week
01/16/2013
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to remind the community that Hearings will begin on Thursday, 24 Tsothohrkó:wa-January for possible amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law.
The Hearing will be conducted using the Community Decision Making Process. The MCK’s Membership Department, which proposed the law be amended, held several information sessions in late 2012.
“A growing number of people are being affected by issues that need to be addressed or corrected,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby. “Unfortunately, a big part of the problem is the amending formula itself, which is different from all other Kahnawà:ke laws. Having this changed will be one of the keys to making real progress.”
The community will be asked to discuss the scope, purpose and intent of possible amendments and, should this be agreed to, the community will be asked to give a mandate to amend the law. Should this not be finalized in the January 24th meeting, a second Hearing would be held on Tuesday, 29 Tsothohrkó:wa-January.
The Hearings will be conducted at the Karonhianónhnha Gymnasium. Both sessions begin at 6pm sharp and will conclude at 8:30pm.
